Stigma by Phillip Hawley Jr. :
In Los Angeles, a young Mayan boy with a blue-crescent-moon tattoo dies mysteriously. In Central America, a puzzling illness is spreading among Mayan tribal villages.

And soon, E.R. physician Luke McKenna will discover the link between these events and demons from his dark past. The secrets that haunt Luke are about to pull him and the woman he loves into a terrifying house of mirrors where nothing is as it first appears. Time is running out, and only by reawakening the ghost of Luke McKenna's past can they discover the truth.

His enemies may also discover a truth: When threatened, Luke McKenna is a very dangerous man.

Salt Bride by Lucinda Brant
When the Earl of Salt Hendon marries squire's daughter Jane Despard, Society is aghast. But Jane and Lord Salt share a secret past of mistrust, heartache and misery. Four years on, they are forced into a marriage neither wants; the Earl to honor a dying man's wish; Jane to save her stepbrother from financial ruin. Beautiful inside and out, the patient and ever optimistic Jane believes love conquers all; the Earl will take some convincing. Enter Diana St. John, who has been living in a fool's paradise believing she would be the next Countess of Salt Hendon. She will go to extreme lengths, even murder, to hold the Earl's attention. Can the newlyweds overcome past prejudices and sinister opposition to fall in love all over again?

Primary Justice by Dave Conifer :
Life after prison was already going badly for Billy Fargo, and that was before he found out he’s the skeleton in a very important person’s closet.

When Billy Fargo walks out of prison he’s determined to take revenge on the man who framed him. But before he can, he’s back in trouble with the law. This time it’s a double murder charge. Living on the outside is hard, but why is it getting harder?

Private eye Ricky Willmar is dead set on finding out, but after connecting the dots he’s shocked at what he learns. There’s somebody out there on the verge of something huge and he’s not about to let a bottom-feeder like Fargo get in his way.

Fargo always said he’d rather die than go back to prison. He never thought those would be his only choices.

City of Darkness by Kim Wright :
City of Darkness takes place in 1888 London, where Jack the Ripper roams the streets with impunity and Scotland Yard seems helpless to stop him.

The science of forensics is in its infancy but a few detectives – Trevor Welles among them – recognize that they are dealing with a different sort of killer, a “modern criminal” who chooses his victims at random. If Jack is to be caught, he won’t be caught with Scotland Yard’s normal methods of deduction for there is no logic to this madness. The question is no longer “Why was the victim killed?” but rather “How was the victim killed?” For the first time in the history of detection, science is trumping deductive reasoning.

When a twist of fate puts Trevor in charge of the case, he hastily assembles Scotland Yard’s first forensics team: Davy Mabrey, the first bobby on the scene of the grisliest of the murders, whose working class common sense proves an invaluable asset, Rayley Abrams, a cautious intellectual whose future at the Yard is marginalized due to his Jewish heritage, Tom Bainbridge, a medical student with aristocratic connections and a secret drinking problem, and Emma Kelly, sister of the Ripper’s last victim who has a troubled past and a gift for linguistics. The team finds an unlikely ally in the form of Queen Victoria herself, who takes an unusual level of interest in the Ripper case and secretly funds the unit. But will they stop Jack in time to spare Leanna Bainbridge, the young heiress with whom Trevor has fallen madly and improbably in love?

While City of Darkness takes place in London, its sequel, City of Light, will travel to Paris on the eve of the Exposition Universalle, the ultimate World’s Fair which debuted Edison’s phonograph, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, and the Eiffel Tower The third book, City of Silence, will take place in St. Petersburg where Victoria’s beloved granddaughter Alexandria is on the verge of marrying the young czar Nicolas, much to her grandmother’s dismay. Throughout the series the Scotland Yard forensics team, which serves as a sort of Victorian-era CSI, will circle the world to investigate high-profile cases, most often at the urging of the Queen.

Sharing: From the Vote Against Project

This amazing post was written and posted on Facebook just a short bit ago. Written by Curtis Scott Brown - creator of The Vote Against Project. It touched me deeply, because while I am in an extremely committed heterosexual relationship I recognize that this amendment is about so much more than same sex couples' right to marry. So much. Please read, educate, and VOTE on May 8th.

A MESSAGE FROM PROJECT CREATOR, CURTIS SCOTT BROWN:
I wake up this morning EXTREMELY upset, and so frustrated. I dont understand how the brain washing has spread so heavily to the majority of NC about what this amendment actually does. Who opened their mouth to say its a Gay-Marriage Amendment / a Same-Sex Amendment? Where is their proof of this fact? Rather than saying it, state it with proven fact.

Thousands of people have worked TIRELESSLY to raise awareness about this amendment harming more straight couples than gay. That it damages the proper upraising of children, it forces my grandparents to decide between love and their pension. It allows abusers to possibly walk our streets again and lay their hands on another single woman with LESS protection rights.

I am a gay man. I am proud of that. -- but thats not why I fight. I already can't get married in this state, nor if this amendment DOES NOT pass, I still CANNOT get married. I have never wanted to get married in YOUR church, I have never dreamt of disrespecting your beliefs and telling you that "you are wrong."

I have fought uncountable hours to allow religious followers whom decide not to wed yet, to have rights and benefits until they are ready. I fight for the children to be healthier and safer in our state.

I fight for the LEGAL, STATE GOVERNMENT, PROTECTED RIGHTS, that I -- AS A CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES deserve.

Im not walking down your isle, so hold back your tears and put down your bible for one second, and read some literature that really tells you what this amendment does.

Its going to eventually hurt your BEST FRIEND, your NEIGHBOR, and if you don't even realize what you're voting on -- IT COULD AFFECT YOU.

You don't have to like me because I am gay. You can still hold on to your belief system and what you find to be true, and right, and holy -- BUT READ THE FACTS -- I've read yours -- now take a second to read the other side.

Brainwashing is an awful thing, we have seen acts of this affect millions before-- lets not allow something like THIS to take away the one thing that holds us against the other states, we are NORTH CAROLINA -- the most incredible, progressive, beautiful state in the south.

Im holding my chin up high, Im holding on to what I KNOW IS RIGHT, and I am casting my vote AGAINST on May 8th -- Because this is more than about ME, this is more than about my sexuality....im doing this for YOU -- for the rights of MY PEOPLE of North Carolina. So we have healthier families, more loving individuals and safer streets.

North Carolina Amendment One

So, this marriage amendment thing is really heating up here in North Carolina.  We vote on the issue on May 8th, and while in the beginning most support seemed to be FOR the amendment, there has been a recent local surge of ant-amendment supporters, like myself.

I've been reminded while watching all this unfold that sometimes logic and reason simply don't matter. If you don't know about the amendment, please educate yourself. I could summarize it all here, but the website The Coalition to Protect NC Families has the most up-to-date information.

Mac & Cheese, Coconut Pie, and Jennifer Nettles

Today was a mac and cheese, green beans, and coconut pie kind of day. Yes, it was. I got the easiest, most incredible recipe for "Impossible" Coconut Pie yesterday... And it was Jennifer Nettles granny's recipe!! How awesome is that? Check it out...

Check out the recipe for Jen's granny's 'impossible' Coconut Pie. These turned out fabulous!!

The food turned out fabulous. I snagged an easy idea for potatoes off of Pintrest - which I'm becoming incredibly addicted to. It's just so darn much fun. Anyway, you just clean and then cook russet potatoes (left whole) in the microwave until they're done through. Cut them in half, then cut the halves into quarters, but don't go through the skin. Spread butter over the hot potatoes and sprinkle generously with seasoned salt (Lawry's) and Parmesan cheese. Broil the potatoes on a baking sheet for about 8 minutes, until the tops are bubbly and golden brown, like pictured above.

I've really enjoyed all the home cooking with my mom this week. The atmosphere here just lends itself to such things. Brings out the cook inside me, which isn't half bad.
